CLYLP summer programming opened a week ago with the 14th Annual San Joaquin Valley Institute! 35 students from schools across the Valley participated in the three day institute at Fresno Pacific University.
This year's institute featured over 12 different speakers presenting on the Four C's, Culture, Community, College, and Careers. Students heard from Vida en El Valle journalist Cynthia Moreno, SJVI Alumn Esmeraldo Soria, and Alex Delgadillo from the UC Merced Admissions Division. Representatives from the social work, law enforcement and education sectors gave their perspectives on their career choices, while staff from I Can Afford College handed out information on scholarship opportunities. And our very own Carlos Camarena (SJVI Class of 2007) taught students to salsa dance!
The SJVI also hosted a parent institute on Day 3 of the program. Parents interacted with CLYLP Alumni, learned the ins and outs of the U.S. university system, the financial aid process, and heard from representatives from CLYLP alumni who are now college graduates and practicing their desired professions.
